NEUROTOXINS NEUROTOXINS

Neurotoxins

What Are Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins, or neuromodulators, including BOTOX, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau, are popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatments. Injections with these drugs can help smooth frown lines, forehead creases, droopy lips, muscle bands in the neck, and crow's feet around the eyes. They may also help reduce dense bands in the neck, thick jaw muscles, lip lines, and gummy smiles. Neurotoxins also have many medical uses, including treatment for neck or eye spasms, excessive sweating, migraine headaches, and overactive bladder.

Who Are The Best Candidates For Neurotoxins?

If you are otherwise healthy and concerned about fine lines or wrinkles on your face, you may be a candidate for cosmetic neurotoxin injections. Schedule a consultation with an experienced injector to learn what areas you may benefit from treating. Certain people are not candidates for neurotoxin injections, including women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and people with certain underlying health conditions. Your medical professional should explain all of these details to you.

How Do Neurotoxins Work?

Neurotoxin injections block the release of a chemical called acetylcholine, which triggers the muscle contractions that cause dynamic wrinkles. These injections temporarily essentially paralyze the muscles and stop them from contracting. Results are visible within one week after treatment and typically last about three to four months, depending on the areas that were treated and how much of the drug is injected. Everyone responds differently, so that is a general guideline. The deeper your lines, the more neurotoxin you may need to achieve the desired result.

What Areas Can Be Treated With Neurotoxins?

When used for cosmetic indications, neurotoxins can help improve frown lines around your lips, on your forehead, and between your eyebrows (11s or glabellar lines). They are also approved to smooth the “crows’ feet” at the corner of your eyelids, and muscle bands in the neck. Providers may also use neurotoxins in other areas “off label” such as gummy smiles and to lift the tip of the nose.

What Will I Experience During My Neurotoxin Treatment?

Your medical professional may apply a local numbing agent to the areas to be treated before your injections. If you are particularly sensitive, you may be given instructions for what to avoid in the days leading up to your injections. Following your provider’s instructions closely will maximize the aesthetic benefits and reduce any risks associated with neurotoxin injections.

Facial plastic surgeon Gregory Keller, MD, FACS

According to facial plastic surgeon Gregory Keller, MD, FACS, of Santa Barbara CA, "Our body produces less of our own defensins as we become older. Applying additional defensin-molecules will help complement the body's own response and boost the results of aesthetic treatments, including neurotoxin or filler injections."

What Can You Expect After A Neurotoxin Treatment?

There is no recovery or downtime after neuromodulator injections. Minor side effects may include soreness, bruising, and/or temporary weakness of surrounding muscles. Don’t touch or otherwise manipulate the treated area for at least four hours or longer after the injections as this may move the neurotoxins to other area(s) that can be adversely affected.

Who Should Inject Neurotoxins?

Only experienced injectors such as plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, dermatologists, oculoplastic surgeons, or aesthetic doctors should perform these procedures. Depending on the state, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants may also perform aesthetic treatments. As these are drugs regulated by the FDA, aestheticians do not perform these treatments.

When Can I Start My DefenAge Homecare Program?

A good home skincare regimen can improve the results of your neurotoxin treatments. For optimum results, we recommend starting DefenAge 2 weeks before treatment and continue using DefenAge for at least 4 weeks after the neurotoxin treatment.

When used after your injections, DefenAge’s 3D Eye Radiance Cream can further smooth crow’s feet and fine lines around the eyes. In addition, this cream lifts, firms, and smooths the upper eyelids while fading dark circles and reducing under-the-eye puffiness for a fully rejuvenated eye area.

DefenAge’s 24/7 Barrier Balance Creamhelps replenish and balance the skin's natural barrier, priming the canvas so your results “pop” even more. Add the DefenAge 8-in-1 BioSerum to brighten skin, promoting overall radiance and luminosity. The key to all DefenAge products is the defensins – our proprietary ingredient that wakes sleeping skin stem cells and instructs them to produce new, healthy, and youthful looking skin.

NOTE: Always consult your medical professional to learn more about neurotoxins and before applying any products to your skin post-procedure.
